Numerous studies have shown that international students benefit from their time on American campuses. However, according to research by Duke University, American students who actively interact with international students benefit from the experience as well. Not only do American students learn about foreign cultures, their interaction with international students enhances their self-confidence, leadership, and quantitative skills. In addition, according to the Duke study, American students who interact with international students are more likely to appreciate art and literature as adults and learn to read or speak a foreign language.
With these advantages in mind, St. Joseph School recently hosted two young ladies from Stargard Szczecinski, Poland. Kamila Zduniak age 11 and her older sister, Marysia Zduniak age 13, attended classes at St. Joseph School from September 2019 through January, 2020. During this time, the sisters stayed with their godmother and St. Joseph School Cafeteria Manager, Lidia Nolle. While at the school, Kamila & Marysia had the opportunity to attend daily classes and interact with St. Joseph School students and teachers. Their stay also included fun activities, such as participating in the St. Joseph School Children’s Choir and performing in the Drama Club’s Christmas show, “Carol and the Belles.” Marysia, who plays the flute, accompanied the St. Joseph Basilica Polish Choir on several occasions. Both girls also had the opportunity to help younger students by teaching a pre-kindergarten class at the Saturday Polish School in Webster.
While staying in the United States, Kamila & Marysia traveled throughout New England as well as New York and Pennsylvania. They especially enjoyed their trip to Hershey Park. Although they had many wonderful experiences, they missed their friends and family back home, as well as their traditional Polish meals.
When asked about their experience at St. Joseph School, the girls were proud to say that they accomplished their primary goal: improving their proficiency in the English language. They were also excited to return to Poland with a Certificate of Accomplishment presented by Principal, Michael Hackenson and were very thankful to Mr. and Mrs. John Hester, who assisted the girls with their Language Arts and Science homework each day.
In 2016, St. Joseph School received certification from the Department of Homeland Security’s Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP) to host international students. The school plans to continue to offer this incredible cultural experience to visiting students as well as their families. Please visit www.sjs-webster.com to learn more about St. Joseph School.
