Choking Prevention: Serving Students Under 4-Years-Old
Due to choking prevention policies, we must offer alternatives foods to our Prek-3-year-old students when lunch menu items are considered choking hazards. Therefore, Prek-3-year-old students may longer purchase sun butter spread sandwiches or hot dogs. Modifications to foods for our Prek-3-year-old students will be made whenever possible. Examples – we will serve sausage patties instead of sausage links and fruits will be cut to 1/2 inch or smaller than a nickel.
Please click HERE for DESE’s info graphic.
In the menu selection, ALL FAMILIES will see “Hot Lunch Alternative – Sandwich.” The hot lunch alternative sandwich for students in the Prek-3-year-old program is ham & cheese Monday-Thursday and Mac & Cheese on Fridays. (Please note that the Mac & Cheese is NOT a sandwich.) The hot lunch alternative for students in Grade Prek-4 through Grade 8 will remain sun butter spread.
