On Sunday, November 29th, The First Sunday of Advent, St. Joseph School Seventh Grade students joined together in the annual building of the Advent Wreath. Advent is the period of four Sundays and weeks before Christmas. The word Advent means ‘Coming’ in Latin and refers to the coming of Jesus into the world. Catholics use Advent to prepare and remember Christmas’s real meaning, and the Advent wreath is part of this tradition. The circular garland of the wreath’s evergreen branches represents eternity, while the five candles represent the coming of the light of Christ into the world. Seventh Grade teacher Mrs. Karen Lefebvre organizes the special Advent Wreath building ceremony each year. It’s always an emotional event to see the students enter the darkened Basilica to the song, “Christ Be Our Light!”
